The monkeypox virus is an orthopoxvirus that causes mpox (monkeypox), a disease with symptoms similar to smallpox, although less severe. While smallpox was eradicated in 1980, mpox continues to occur in countries of central and west Africa. HANOI, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ten southern localities of Vietnam have reported 117 monkeypox cases, including six deaths, according to the Institut Pasteur in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday.
The institute said the number of infections has increased sharply since November and kept rising.
