WNT Reports/Commentary
Author : Richard Backus
Jan. 4, 2009 (World News Trust) -- The
promoters of Globalization, in their headlong and single-minded lust
for profit, have exhibited one major flaw, a complete ignorance of the
basic economic principles underlying capitalism. While marginally
lowering prices on products by replacing decently-paid western workers
with third world workers at exploitative wages, they have killed the
proverbial "goose that laid the golden egg."

to protect innocent lives. Israel never targets civilians.

Ramzy Baroud Jan. 3, 2009 (World News Trust) -- In
times of crisis, most Arabs tune in to Aljazeera television. Sometimes
it’s comforting for the truth to be stated the way it is, with all of
its gory and unsettling details, without blemishes and without
censorship. When Israel carried out massive air strikes against Gaza Dec. 27, terrorizing an already hostage and malnourished population, I too tuned in to Aljazeera.

Israel's
bombardment of the Gaza Strip was predictable, if not preventable.
Israel's crimes against the Palestinians simply could not take place on
such a massive scale were it not for U.S. support. The American people,
therefore, have a responsibility to act and pressure their government
to end its financial, military, and diplomatic support for Israeli
violations of international law -- a necessary first step towards any
viable and sustainable peace.

Bernard Madoff Dec. 24, 2008 (World News Trust) -- While
most folks on the bottom get the shaft, Bernie Madoff made it big.
Madoff started his firm with $5,000 in 1960 at 21 years old. He
supposedly earned it from installing sprinklers and working as a life
guard, a pretty daunting task at 1960 wages even in Long Island. Bernie
has now admitted to swindling rich folks out of $50 billion. Now if any
of these people had any idea of how hard it would have been to save
$5,000 in 1960 at those kind of jobs they never would have invested
with him to start with.

Dec. 21, 2008 (World News Trust) -- It’s
holiday season in Manhattan and despite the economic downturn, there
seems to be no shortage of well-dressed humans cavorting, laughing,
and spending freely. Walking among them, a homeless man begs for
money -- shaking his tattered coffee cup (adorned with images of Greek
architecture) to rattle the few coins therein. A veteran of the first
Gulf War, this man is no longer concerned with yellow ribbons. Right
now, he’d settle for a scrap of food and a dry pair of shoes.

Ramzy Baroud Dec. 18, 2008 (World News Trust) -- It’s
incomprehensible that a region such as the Gaza Strip, so rich with
history, so saturated with defiance, can be reduced to a few blurbs,
sound bites and reductionist assumptions, convenient but deceptive,
vacant of any relevant meaning, or even true analytical value.

Dec. 22, 2008 (World News Trust) -- In a recent interview with ABC’s Charles Gibson, President George W. Bush offered that the greatest regret of his presidency was that the intelligence was wrong on Iraq. He then went on to say that a lot of people had put their reputations on the line. It hadn’t occurred to me at first that he omitted mentioning regret for the lives lost based on that bad intelligence.

Ramzy Baroud Dec. 13, 2008 (World News Trust) -- The United States, Russia and China
are sending a terrible message to the rest of the world by refusing to
take part in the historic signing of a treaty that bans the production
and use of cluster bombs. In a world that is plagued by war, military
occupation and terrorism, the involvement of the great military powers
in signing and ratifying the agreement would have signaled -- if even
symbolically -- the willingness of these countries to spare civilians’
unjustifiable deaths and the lasting scars of war.

Joel S. Hirschhorn Dec. 12, 2008 (World News Trust) -- The current Illinois governor, Rod
Blagojevich, recently charged with crimes by the federal government, just
follows in the footsteps of previous convicted Illinois governors and a huge number of other Illinois officials
convicted of crimes. What is
remarkable is that in the 2008 election Illinois voters had the opportunity to
recognize that they needed to use their constitutional convention opportunity to
reform state government. They voted
not to use it.
Which raises the question: How stupid or brainwashed are most Illinois
citizens?

 Barack Obama
Dec. 8, 2008 (World News Trust) -- Mr. G.B. Shaw sez:
“I often quote myself; it adds spice to my
conversation.” With that concept in mind, I’ll remind you of
something I said in a recent interview, re: St. Barack. Obama’s
ascendancy, I posited, “is an excellent illustration of how the
system handles dissent. A black face, a soothing voice and a vague
message of change -- all designed to keep the rabble pacified without
changing anything at all.”
This,
I submit, could be deemed
the ultimate
conspiracy theory.

Dec. 8, 2008 (World News Trust) -- In the twilight of the Bush days, in the twilight of the twilight
season, a consensus has formed that we are headed into a long, dark
passage leading we know not where. Even CNBC's Lawrence Kudlow has been
reduced to searching for stray "mustard seeds" of hope on hands and
knees in a bleak and tortured financial landscape. Half the enterprises
in the land are lined up for some kind of relief bailout and a blizzard
of pink slips has cut economic visibility to zero.

Woody Guthrie Dec. 4, 2008 (World News Trust) -- If you were to open your mouth and belt
out the words “this land is your land,” you
could rest assured that someone nearby would add: “this land is my
land.” The chorus to Woody Guthrie’s 1940
classic is common knowledge… as are the first couple of verses. But
it ain’t until you get to the later verses -- those often omitted
from official versions -- that you start comprehendin’ what good ol’
Woody had in mind:

George W. Bush Dec. 4, 2008 (World News Trust) -- Electing Barack Obama president
was the first step in redeeming American democracy. The second step must be indicting
ex-president George W. Bush, giving him a fair trial, finding him guilty of many
criminal acts and putting him in prison.

Dec. 1, 2008 (World News Trust) -- A lot of readers are twanging on me for refraining to castigate
President-elect Obama for deeds yet undone. They're discouraged by the
advisors and cabinet sectetaries he's picked, ostensibly because the
crew coming in are Washington "insiders," meaning they can't possibly
see or do things differently.

One of the most striking hallmarks of the Bush/Cheney administration
has been the privatization of as many formerly government jobs as it
could get away with. This effort has sometimes been referred to as
“competitive outsourcing”, and the implication of that term is that
privatization creates competition which ultimately results in better or
more efficient services at lower cost.

Nov. 26, 2008 (World News Trust) -- The U.S. financial system is in collapse, and energy costs are likely
to come back again next spring and summer with a vengeance that we
can't imagine. This will make the price of food, already off the scale,
skyrocket even further. We must all get to know our local farmers, or
better yet, become them. In the moment, we have the "luxury" of low
energy prices, and it is during this time that we should be making food
security our top priority.
