There's an old saying in the con artist business: never give a sucker an even break.
It means that if you find someone who is gullible enough to fall for your scam, you should squeeze them for every penny they have. Don't let them off the hook with a small loss, or a chance to get their money back.
No, you have to exploit their greed, their fear, their ignorance, and their hope until they are completely ruined. It sounds cruel, but it's the only way to survive in this cutthroat world.
You can't afford to be sentimental, or ethical, or compassionate. You have to be ruthless, cunning, and merciless. That's how you win.
Of course, there's another saying in the con artist business: the only sure thing is that there is no sure thing. It means that no matter how good your plan is, or how careful you are, or how smart you think you are, there is always a risk that something will go wrong.
Maybe your mark will wise up, or the cops will show up, or your partner will betray you. Maybe you'll make a mistake, or get unlucky, or get greedy. Maybe karma will catch up with you, and you'll find out that you are the sucker who got played.
It happens more often than you think. It sounds scary, but it's the reality of this game. You can't afford to be overconfident, or careless, or complacent. You have to be alert, adaptable, and humble. That's how you survive.
